THE GRATE DEBATE

‘Is Graffiti Anti-Social Art?’

Councils spend millions of pounds erasing it. Young graffiti artists spend millions creating it. Is graffiti okay so long as it’s on someone else’s wall? Would you give graffiti artists the keys to your home? On the continent, even the walls of people’s houses get the graffiti treatment.

Some companies spend thousands funding graffiti, and there are people who make a living out of it. So is it people’s art or anti-social art?

Have your say in ‘The Grate Debate’.

THIS MORNING CALL

This Morning Call is the unusual moniker of an electronic pop producer Ben Heyworth.

Based in south Manchester, Ben’s unashamedly eclectic and often downbeat style borrows from the likes of Keane, The Postal Service and a-ha. It’s an exciting new direction in a city already blessed with a rich musical inheritance, an independent spirit and an international reputation.

Mixing traditional indie balladry with electronic quirks, glitch and ambience, Ben draws a somber line under the increasingly creative goings- on in the electro scene, whilst putting a quiet rocket under the traditional guitar band set up. www.thismorningcall.com

On the bill:

Paper Boats / The Quangos / Any Idle Clone / Tom Lannon

Over the years Iguana has showcased some of the best talent Manchester has to offer. Tonight we’ve specially hand picked some of our personal favourites to showcase as part of CAF and have put together and unmissable line up.

Paper Boats – encompassing Nick Cave esc lyrics and those epic moments associated with the likes of Arcade Fire, their sound results in something incredibly special and unusually refreshing. Paper Boats’ impressive line up includes Violin, Piano, Drums, Double Bass, Trumpet, Guitar and Lead Vocals from hearty Singer/Songwriter Petty Thief. Highly recommended.

www.myspace.com/paperboatsuk

The Quangos – Entertaining, endearing and immediately likeable. This trio of young Manchester lads have successfully veered away from the generic Indie/Rock sound by mixing Indie with Ska & Pop creating something upbeat and charming that you cant help but smile at with impressive vocals from front man Josh Goddard. Highly recommended.

Any Idle Clone – Any Idle Clone is a solo music project in which all material is written, performed and produced by Chorlton-based singer/songwriter Dan Conley. With a subtle brilliance, both vocally and in his writing, Dan’s songs are likely to tug at your heartstrings if you listen with the intent of understanding the depth of their meaning.

www.myspace.com/anyidleclone

Tom Lannon – Soulful and imaginative, Tom’s songs are likely to take you back to a place you’ve been at one time in your life. His husky tone, powerful vocals and expressive lyrics make for an emotional combination, bound to keep your eyes peeled and your ears pricked for the duration.

Double Bill

Double Bill: BUT I JUST WANT TO FALL IN LOVE AND WORK WITH ELEPHANTS and ELVIS IS MY MUM

But I Just want to Fall in Love and Work With Elephants – This is a comedy performance which considers one of life’s important questions, which is why do I often not like the use of music in performance? Drawing on songs from Hairspray, by way of the Chuckle Brothers, this post-gay performer valiantly tries to escape the fact that she is a left- handed lesbian from Liverpool.

Elvis is My Mum – A visual piece exploring family and family trees. Elvis is My Mum presents the audience with a literal and metaphorical ‘rainbow family tree’.

MIDNIGHT DELTA

Four-piece blues band.
