RICHARD SHEARS LOITERING WITH IN TEN

Here’s the challenge; ten portraits each taking less than 20 minutes, painted over two days at two different venues – the Festival’s busy Craft Market and Electrik, one of Chorlton’s hectic bars. Come and be a part of Richard’s exciting task as he helps us celebrate our tenth Festival in this unusual (and brave) way at the Craft Market. And then have your tea and watch the artist in action at Electrik as he completes the challenge of painting ten rapid portraits, each taking less than 20 minutes. See the work he completed on Saturday 22 May at the Craft Market and maybe be one of his subjects. The work will be displayed in Electrik until the end of the Festival and will then be yours to collect and keep.

MANKY IN THE CELLAR WITH COPLAND SMITH AND FRIENDS

ART OF CONVERSATION TORBAY ROAD AND FRIENDS BOOKCLUB

One side of the menu is food; the other will be ten conversation topics – choose your dish, then choose your topic. To add to the sense of adventure read David Nicholls book One Day in advance of the event.

MANCHESTER ROAD PLAYERS THE RISE AND FALL OF LITTLE VOICE

A quiet, shy girl called Little Voice inherits a collection of LPs of female vocalists from her beloved father who died when she was a child. They are her only consolation in a life burdened by a boozy, vulgar mother who, although consumed by drink, is desperately trying to find herself another man. The man she falls for is more interested in exploiting Little Voice’s musical talent.

Performance runs from Wednesday 26 – Saturday 29 May

Concessions: NUS/OAP/Disabled/Unemployed

Double Bill: CORVUS and WORD MUSIC

Corvus are a local act performing their folk materials and covers from the likes of Leonard Cohen, Richard Thompson, Sonny Condell and The Decemberists.

Word Music were formed at the beginning of 2010 in Manchester by a selection of musicians and writers interested in mixing poetry and music, rap, soul, and Bollywood.

Festival Highlight

ADRIAN EDMONDSON AND THE BAD SHEPHERDS

The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because they really like the noise. They think the songs are better than people remember. They love folk instruments. It works. They do songs by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Jam, Sham 69, The Undertones, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, The Specials, Talking Heads, Squeeze and others, even Kraftwerk! Alright, they’re not all punk, but they come from roughly the same era. They’ve mostly given the songs a kind of Celtic feel, and they’ve stuck in the odd reel and jig here and there. But occassionally they just thrash! They’ve always thought the excitement of a reel taking off is the nearest thing to the excitement of watching punk live in the 70’s.

“…not just the hit of this festival [Leceister Big Session], but probably every other festival this summer.” fRoots
