Art in action

RICHARD SHEARS LOITERING WITH IN TEN

Here’s the challenge; ten portraits each taking less than 20 minutes, painted over two days at two different venues – the Festival’s busy Craft Market and Electrik, one of Chorlton’s hectic bars. Come and be a part of Richard’s exciting task as he helps us celebrate our tenth Festival in this unusual (and brave) way at the Craft Market. And then have your tea and watch the artist in action at Electrik as he completes the challenge of painting ten rapid portraits, each taking less than 20 minutes. See the work he completed on Saturday 22 May at the Craft Market and maybe be one of his subjects. The work will be displayed in Electrik until the end of the Festival and will then be yours to collect and keep.

ARTS AND CRAFTS MARKET

Take a break from the entertainment and have a wander around the Festival’s Arts and Craft market, back by popular demand. It has been described in the past as ‘better than Christmas’!

FAMILY FUNDAY

THIS MORNING CALL

This Morning Call is the unusual moniker of an electronic pop producer Ben Heyworth.

Based in south Manchester, Ben’s unashamedly eclectic and often downbeat style borrows from the likes of Keane, The Postal Service and a-ha. It’s an exciting new direction in a city already blessed with a rich musical inheritance, an independent spirit and an international reputation.

Mixing traditional indie balladry with electronic quirks, glitch and ambience, Ben draws a somber line under the increasingly creative goings- on in the electro scene, whilst putting a quiet rocket under the traditional guitar band set up. www.thismorningcall.com

IGUANA’S FINEST PART 1

Part 1 of Iguana’s finest featuring hand-picked favourites in celebration of Chorlton Arts Festival’s tenth year.

On the bill:

Paper Boats / The Quangos / Any Idle Clone / Tom Lannon

Over the years Iguana has showcased some of the best talent Manchester has to offer. Tonight we’ve specially hand picked some of our personal favourites to showcase as part of CAF and have put together and unmissable line up.

Paper Boats – encompassing Nick Cave esc lyrics and those epic moments associated with the likes of Arcade Fire, their sound results in something incredibly special and unusually refreshing. Paper Boats’ impressive line up includes Violin, Piano, Drums, Double Bass, Trumpet, Guitar and Lead Vocals from hearty Singer/Songwriter Petty Thief. Highly recommended.

The Quangos – Entertaining, endearing and immediately likeable. This trio of young Manchester lads have successfully veered away from the generic Indie/Rock sound by mixing Indie with Ska & Pop creating something upbeat and charming that you cant help but smile at with impressive vocals from front man Josh Goddard. Highly recommended.

Any Idle Clone – Any Idle Clone is a solo music project in which all material is written, performed and produced by Chorlton-based singer/songwriter Dan Conley. With a subtle brilliance, both vocally and in his writing, Dan’s songs are likely to tug at your heartstrings if you listen with the intent of understanding the depth of their meaning.

Tom Lannon – Soulful and imaginative, Tom’s songs are likely to take you back to a place you’ve been at one time in your life. His husky tone, powerful vocals and expressive lyrics make for an emotional combination, bound to keep your eyes peeled and your ears pricked for the duration.

11pm till late – Resident DJ Richard Hartwell spinning Funk, Soul, New Wave, Rare Grove, Disco & US Garage.

Double Bill

Double Bill: BUT I JUST WANT TO FALL IN LOVE AND WORK WITH ELEPHANTS and ELVIS IS MY MUM

But I Just want to Fall in Love and Work With Elephants – This is a comedy performance which considers one of life’s important questions, which is why do I often not like the use of music in performance? Drawing on songs from Hairspray, by way of the Chuckle Brothers, this post-gay performer valiantly tries to escape the fact that she is a left- handed lesbian from Liverpool.

Elvis is My Mum – A visual piece exploring family and family trees. Elvis is My Mum presents the audience with a literal and metaphorical ‘rainbow family tree’.

MIDNIGHT DELTA

Four-piece blues band.

FLASHLIGHT BY BREAD

Flashlight

(BREAD – Ruth Essex, Kate Moran, David Boultbee)

Community focussed, light based, landscape intervention

We’re lighting up Chorlton with 1000 paper lanterns and want you to help!

Artists’ group BREAD create works which gently ask you to stop for a moment and take in your surroundings in the hope that you’ll notice something new. This time we’re attempting landscape intervention by flash-mob!

Look out around Chorlton for the Flashlight flyers that you can fold into a lantern. They’re available from the Festival Hub, the library and lots of shops and cafes. We’re also handing them out in schools – we may even post one through your door!!

We’ll let you know what to do with your lantern on May 22. Until then mum’s the word, but it will be around Chorlton at 9pm.

More information available online: http://breadartcollective.co.uk

You’ll also need a light kit, available from the Festival Hub for £1
